Clarksburg City Council will meet Thursday for a regular session.
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — Clarksburg City Council will meet for a regular session on Thursday with a full slate of items under new business, starting with a proposed sewage rate hike.
Clarksburg City Council will meet Thursday for a regular session.
The proposed increase appears on the agenda after at least one major sewage project was brought before council at Monday’s work session.
John Workman, superintendent of Clarksburg Public Works, and city engineer Tom Brown discussed a cleaning procedure that needs to be done to a sewage trunk line that services Rose Bud Plaza and the area around the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center.
The cleaning is estimated to cost $1.1 million and is only one of the projects or repairs that need to be done in the near future, they said.
“Considering the aging infrastructure of the city, we’ve got a lot of problems and issues at the wastewater treatment plant. Obviously, we have a lot of problems all around the city that were discussed Monday night in our work session,” said Councilman Will Hyman.
“It’s going to take a lot of money to fix, unfortunately. As we feel the brunt of this inflation, repair prices are only going to go up, and we have to cover those costs,” he said.
Another ordinance under new business is one that would help insure that the city’s roads are properly backfilled by utility companies that mill roads for repairs.
“Basically what we’re talking about is when a utility company or contractor comes and has to mill the street. ... If they dig up a certain percentage of the street, they can’t just patch it up. They have to replace the pavement. If they dig something up, it has to meet our specifications for blacktop or concrete,” Interim City Manager Mark Kiddy said at Monday’s work session.
This move comes after several instances of insufficient patching resulting in dips in city roads where utility work was previously done.
Other items under new business are to help city services. These include roof repairs or replacements for the North View Fire Station and Clarksburg Public Works Building, new portable radios for the police and fire departments and a fire department cost recovery ordinance.
Many of the items that can be found on this week’s agenda were brought up at Monday’s work session, which officials believe is a good turnaround time.
“I honestly think that’s how government should work. We sit down, we talk about the issues and then we take immediate action on it,” Hyman said.
“If we have an issue, we need to talk about it immediately and move as quickly as possible because sometimes it gets lost with other things that happen here at City Hall, and it’s great to see it move that quick,” he said.
